Hi, instructor Madland and everyone here from EDCI335.

I am Xiaoou Gao you can just call me Ricky, I am a forth year international student in Econ.

For my career, I have done many jobs like a consultant for a guarantee corporation, a music teacher, an assistant for Psychological clinic and I also have working experiences in bank and Securities Company.

For my hobbies, I love sports I spent over 10 years playing tennis and swimming. Also good at pool, skiing, basketball and so on. Basically everything besides travelling, because there is too much time wasted on the way from places to places and I do not have enough time right now so I might start travelling after my kid got his/her university degree.

I was a professional singer, I started learning to sing since I was 9 years ago and after so many years’ hard work, I have successfully performed several commercial events in the past 7 years. But after all singing is my hobby so I do not want to related music to business and that is the reason why my albums are not for sell and I am not looking for any kind of commercial co-op projects anymore. I won the 1st place of Voice of Victoria 2015 Chinese competition but that was an accident just cuz 1 of friend wanted me to have a try.

Besides this, I play video games as well, finally, something suits my age. I am a fps game player, not a pro but I made to Top500 in Overwatch in North America Server in 2017 playing hitscans.

Btw, I wrote a stupid novels with over 800,000 word just for my personal enjoyment and I am proud of it.

To myself, a man’s life has many different period and I am not that kinda guy who plans everything in advance but a happy guy who like maximizing my satisfaction by bringing the best to my family and friends.

Last but not least, medicine, nutrition & dietetics and designing are essential and indispensable. I see them as future fields for humanity. I will never stop learning because I like learning.

One of my favourite learning experiences

Speaking of my favorite learning experience would be everything that I have learned. Mostly from my parents but I will just take my music learning as an example.

I took music lessons from 5 different teachers back in my childhood, though there are alternative concepts and approaching ways, all of the teachers were so kind and led me with patience, no matter how hard the work was, they were always there for me. I will not expand how hard it was here because it is too long and too much but without the support from them, I would not finish my piano and guitar lessons I would probably gave up. Even today, I still remember everything that they taught me and that all paid off. I am able to record and make songs as many as I want now. I am happy, they are happy and my family and fans are happy.

That is all I want for my life.

Interactive Learning Resource Peer Review of Group 10

Topic: Basic Java Programming

Hi, professor Madland, thank you for giving me the chance to review again, I was misreading the assignment guide and thanks again for the links to the other groups.


First of all, although I have taken a computer course in Uvic before, I have 0 knowledge left for computer science, especially programming, I only know java script and I know nothing about java language. So being as a complete beginner:

I personally think a trailer video would be a better approaching to this technical skill. These history readings are not really helpful for knowing the concept and it kind of makes me lose interest in it.

Setup up

The set part is clear and straight due to the video, however, it would be more convenient if the download links are posted in the introduction.


I did not see their arrangement for the topics or steps, so I guess it should be done in the order of number. What I see about the third part is that there are suddenly too much concepts and due to the fact that all of the concepts(important and not important e.g. history) are listed on websites which includes huge amount of readings. I mean it is the contents that we need to learn about Java, but it would be much better if there are more specific points of guiding instead of read all of this and that.

I understand these are all necessary concepts but I do not really see the interactive part of learning besides reading. Maybe is because that I have no basic knowledge of Java, I am having a really hard time reading and it is not an efficient way of learning for people like me. But on the other hand, I can understand because it is computer science, I can not come up with any better ideas of teaching this.

Comments, Variables, data types

This part is much clearer with the examples written below.

I am surprised that the following parts are way better, not only the layouts are beautiful not crowed, also the knowledge pionts are now combining with operating videos.

I wish there are tables like this for part 3 as well. Last but not least, the final program:

This is more like a starter for the whole Java learning. I was expecting for a lot of more than this after tons of reading and new concepts. The final program does not require anything but the calculation orders from topic 8 and sadly this is like the only interaction with students that I found after reading through the whole resources.


Maybe it is because the project is done by several people, the content (readings and layouts) differs a lot from each other among topics. This is more like a class schedule to me, I wish to see how would they demonstrate these knowledge and how they are going to interact with learners. But besides these, well done. I know how hard it is to make computer science interesting for beginners. But the history part really needs work.



Cooperative Group Assessment Assignment

I personally think that our Interactive Learning Resource was very well done due to over 30 modifications. Glad we have been pushing through the plan step by step, so we did not waste time focusing on different problems at a time. We find a problem and move on to the next after solving the previous one. We all agree on the choice of picking Edius was great owing to the fact that almost all of my group mates actually use Edius to make videos instead of other professional software. We have been thinking about how should we present Edius to the student but it turns out that the descriptions on its official website does a much better job on this than we do, so we decided to introduce it through its website. On the other hand, after running through the project, PPT with videos and demonstrations with the student following in time turn out to be the best way of interactive teaching that we think of, the additional assignments are also perfect summaries for classes.

Also as I mentioned in the post before, we changed the topics a little bit just because we do not want to mess up the essential ideas by teaching too much expanded details. we made the objects of class less but much clearer and it did work well. We also saved lots of time which means more time for student to try on themselves.

At last, it was fun to adjust the requirements for the final exam. It is the first time that we are ones designing for others. I feel proud of ourselves and good luck! Students!

Personal Learning Challenge

Ok, now here we are, the final stage of my cooking learning plan.

According to my original learning plan, my final stage was to make a full table of dinner by myself to serve my friends. However, since my friend invited me to his home party help him with cooking, I think it might be a better idea to work together with my friends. Not only it is more efficient and fun, I can learn from others in time, which means I would have more opportunity learning details from my friend in person, which I might missed from cooking videos that I watched before.

Because I am the only newbie among my friends, I got the easy parts and my job is mainly watch and learn from aside. Firstly, I got get rid of the skins of carrots and potatoes using a peeler knife and one of my friend cut them into small equal pieces. He taught me the right positioning of holding knives and how different angels could affect the outcome shapes of the veggies. He said no matter how much you have to cut, be patient and stay focus, safety always comes first otherwise you would lose a finger.

My following job is to cut a dozen of small onions in half, which I thought was a pretty easy job for me and I nailed it.

I love chicken wings and so do my friends but I seriously have no idea that needle puncher can be used on chicken wings. I only knew it can be used on steaks and my mom used to poke holes on wings using chopsticks. Because it was my first time using this tools, I got nervous and I punched too hard in the beginning, resulted in crashing some of the bones, which is not what you usually want on chicken wings, lesson learnt.

My next job is make the chicken wings. I put ginger and garlic pieces together with oil into the pot and after there is no water left in the pot. I put the wings above them. There is a special sauce for chicken wings from my friend that I have not seen before on the internet but it smells really good so I put the sauce into it as well.

My friend told me to cover the wings for 30 minutes and it is called stewing.

Here is the final picture of my wings! It was beautiful and all my friends was happy and I am so proud of myself. It is all because the plan that I made ahead, it allowed me to improve in such an efficient way that I could not believe. I actually learnt how to cook (not really) in 5 weeks. Anyways, I decide to make plans for learning new things from now on and I am thinking about learning a new instrument next!

After reading the feedback from professor Madland on hypothesis annotations, I made several improvements to my previous blueprint. Our idea of using PPT to illustrate classes was not as efficient as using videos. But what we teach mainly through demonstrations. So the PPTs are just for a brief concept of the topic. But it would also be nice for us to use official online tutorials or some interesting ideas from Youtube as well.

But first of all, to start with the recourse, we decided that we would start with the background of the social media nowadays. How they have developed through times, how many fields that they have influenced and where the industry is heading to in the future.

Our class is mainly around a video making software named Edius. We will give a brief and simple concept about the software, together with the introduction from its official website:

Then we would compare Edius with the other professional software like Adobe Effect and Adobe Premiere. Let them know what is a professional video making software and most importantly, let them realize the differences between theses professional software and entertaining platforms. Given the resources from professor Madland:


We think that video making is a professional skill and by professional, we mean if you are making a video, you should be knowing what the functions are and use them properly to achieve a certain level of your expectation, rather than using preset to kill your precious creativity. If you want to learn, you have to learn functions one by one. For example, adding filters can make the video look nicer but judging the color differences through exposure and compensation can also achieve the same outcome. You will learn nothing if you are following presets. After the class, you should be able to use functions separately to create original contents with the resources you have.


For the topics, we divided them to 3 phases.

  • Clips&cutting
  • Filters&Color
  • Subtitles
  • Audio editing
  • Export (Encoding&Output)

These are not only arranged in difficulties, but also it is the casual order of making a video.

So firstly, Clips and cutting, is basically about its title, student are starting with the easiest but the most important part. We cut the videos into pieces and we remove the useless ones and leave the ones with pure contents. We would send a small sample video clips for them to cut themselves into the length we want. We use the same clips in demonstrations so they would be able to follow up with us in class.

Our next step is the teach them how to use filters by showing them the following video:

After mastering these two skills, we would then give them a in class assignment, which is to process and remake the sample video, cut it into less than 1 min and rejudge the color of the video using filters. Afterwards, we would assemble their works and post it in front of the class to discuss. In the end of the class, we would ask the student to record some videos themselves after class so they can submit their own funny original homemade clips, volunteering to be the sample video for the next class.

Since they are clear of the idea of professional video making software, they are free to use other software in the next class and the following topics are subtitles and editing audio, which we call it the polishing part of video making:

We show the videos in the beginning of the class, in order to give them an idea of how subtitles works in Edius. Then we send the class the clips submitted from last class by student and start demonstrating how to input and use effects on subtitles.

We would with the same order for audio editing as well. But in this part, I would have to emphasize the importance of copyrights. You should always be careful with the music with copyrights. Millions of Youtube videos are forced to be deleted due to copyrights for pictures, figures and especially music. So I would use one of my original songs for the class to process. At last, same as last class, we expect a in class assignment of a processed video clips with subtitles and audio used.

Finally, it is Export&Encoding.

When you have the abilities to process the videos in the way you want, you would need to export the video to make your work a video.

This website we are going to show them is the formats of video. There are huge differences among formats, some of them can not be played on Windows and some of them are invalid for Macs. Some of them are highly compressed with bad quality and some of them are not compressed at all but a 1 minute video can be 1GB large. We should choose the export formats wisely due to what we need and this website is a great tool for understanding. We recommend H.264, which is a video file encoded with H.264 compression. We choose it because it is a popular format for high definition video. It is often used as the video format for AVCHD camcorders, HDTV, Blu-ray, and HD DVD.

Last but not least, we think that a final work from each student and improve their learning. So we would ask for a fully processed video made with original resources from students to “pass” the course.

  • The video should contain clipping from at least 3 original homemade videos with different scenes from the students himself/herself or free-to-use pictures. Suggesting:
  • The video should contain at least 6 Subtitles.
  • The video should be using at least 3 different filters.
  • The video should be inserted with at least 3 audios. Audio can be a original record from yourself or it can be a free-to-use music. Suggesting:
  • The video can be in any format but should be longer than 4mins.
  • When you have done post it on your Youtube channel and send me the link, you can send to my email as well(Not recommended).

Personal Learning Challenge

This is the 4th week of my challenge and according to the plan, which is just like what I said last week, that I am going to make chicken this time. My roommate asked me if I need any help from him but I think I would work on my own this time on the chicken.

Here is the chicken leg that I bought. Due the previous successes on cooking, I decided that maybe I should enhance my original plan by changing chicken legs into fried chicken in small pieces. Indeed, more process is required for this one.

First of all I cut the meat of the leg using knifes. I got rid of the bones and made them as good shaped as they can.

Then I sink the chicken into the mix of ginger, pepper and soy. Pepper and salt was the original recipe I saw in videos. However, my friends told me that it would be nice to use soy instead of salt, otherwise it could be too salty since I am new and I can not really control the input quantity. On the other hand, mixing meat with ginger can also reduce its mild astringency. It is always good to listen to several friends or information from different aspects.

In order to make fried chicken, not only I have to use a lot of cooking oil, I also need to make a warp on each piece of the chicken made out of eggs and flour.

I am sorry that I could not take a picture when I poured the chicken into the pot because the sparks freaks me out a bit. My friend also told me this would happen if there is too much water on the surface of the chicken. Lesson learnt.

Here is the final picture of my fried chicken. I am so proud of myself. Thanks to my friends and family. Last but not least, I would have done so much poorer without a learning plan. A plan not only make the future path clearer for me, but also when I need changes based on the progress, I am able to change the plan in an organized way.

After knowing that I am learning cooking at the moment, one of my friend Kui invited me to her home party next week and I get to make a whole dinner with my friends. I am so excited for that and I am so ready!

Personal Learning Challenge

Ok, so like I mentioned that I am going to make chicken this time, but my room mate actually told me not yet. He said making chicken required more skills like you need to use a knife to cut chicken and after that you even need to pickle it a bit. Since I have never used a knife before, I think it is necessary to listen to a friend who has way more experience than me. My room mate, Ricardo, he start cooking at the age of 14 and he has been making breakfast and dinner for his family since 16. That is why I am making Tofu this time. There are a tiny bit of more comparing to making noodles. For example, a knife is required and the tofu can not be eat right after you open it. I was still questioning that even after Ricardo told me that the tofu needs to be sink into the water for 10 minutes first. I looked up for videos of making tofu and though some of them do sink tofu but some of them do not, it is still much cleaner and safer to sink the tofu before eating it.

I brought tofu and soy source from Fujiya. I used knife to cut them into small rectangle pieces like they do in videos. Put them right into the water for 10 minutes. Cutting tofu is much harder than it looks, because when you are putting your left hand on it just to keep it steady, you could be crushing it. Tofu is really soft but still stronger than a jelly so I did not mess up after I paid extra attention cutting it.

I think I did a pretty good job on cutting the tofu though pieces are in different shapes and sizes, I did not break them. Ricardo also supported me on making chicken next time. Even after I messed up by pouring too much soy source on it.

He also told me that pickling is very similar to sinking, while pickling is a very effective method for early preservation of vegetables. Nowadays, the preservation of vegetables has changed from simple preservation to processing technology of vegetables with unique flavor. The process of chicken we are going to do next time is adding a new flavor to it and I am so excited about that because I get to choose any flavor I want. This is exactly what I get from learning. I gain the ability to choose, to decide what I truly want for myself and I can actually make it myself, every of the process is under my control. Moreover, I am free to try new combinations with my creativity. Thanks to the support and help from my friend and I am so glad that I had a plan before doing all of this. Video learning together with in time actual operation is the best way of learning and teaching that I can think of at the moment. I am so confident making the chicken next time and the interactive learning project.

Learning Design Blueprint


So the topic of my group has chosen is Video Making. We are teaching people how to make videos, because my group mates all agreed on presenting a skill that we are all good at and in that way we are able to teach others about it.

In modern digital society, video production is more and more respected by the public and it has successfully shown the world how fast the information can be shared and transferred. While giving the concept of video production is the process of re-editing, integrating and arranging pictures, videos and background music to generate a new video file. It is more like a reprocessing of the original material than just a synthesis. For example, the advertisements that we can seen everywhere on the internet or television, is video making, music videos and film-making requires video making as well. However, the concept of video making is getting more and more confusing nowadays. Some believed that clipping videos simply by cutting them shorter or making a photo album into a slide is video making. Moreover, with the endless emergence of video making software, the threshold of the industry is getting lower and lower. For instance, there is app called Tik Tok, which is a digital video making platform formed in China in 2016 and stats from Chinacpda has shown that the users from overseas rose significantly after the year 2018. The slogan of Tik Tok is basically that everyone can make videos in a super easy way and that is why my group thinks that apps like this reduce the quality of video production.

As I mentioned before, video making is more like a reprocessing of the original material than just a synthesis. It is a industry that requires creativity like how people can make great advertisements. But in apps like Tik Tok, there are tons of presets, which are usually fixed combinations of video clipping and music insert. That is the reason why Tik Tok might look cool at first, but soon it faded out. Speaking of Tik Tok in China nowadays, all it comes to people’s mind is a platform full of low quality looked-alike videos, what is the fun watching people different faces doing the same thing over and over again?

So after we discussed about the phenomenon, we think that video making was and is a professional skill and by professional, we mean if you are making a video, you should be knowing what the functions are and use them properly to achieve a certain level of your expectation, rather than using preset to kill your precious creativity. We are planing to teach people how to make videos through professional software like Adobe Effect, Adobe Premiere or Edius, instead of entertaining platforms with presets.

We decided to use PPT to present our resources and concepts, because the concepts are not complex and video making can be taught more effectively using interactive learning. All of the student are required to bring their laptops or we can be teaching in a computer classroom which would be more convenient. While we are showing them slides and skills step by step, they are able to follow up in time and every time we are introducing a new function, they can be practice and ask questions anytime they want, we also think that we would ask a student to come up and demonstrate in front of the class using teacher’s computer, he can be a good leader in the class and he can share his new opinions with the class like he might want to do this in another way. For example, adding filters can make the video look nicer but judging the color differences through exposure and compensation can also achieve the same outcome. We want a nice and easy going studying atmosphere where everyone can share stuffs from class and we want them to learn happily because after all, learning is fun.

We will be making our own ppts to guide the class and using more demonstrations displaying due to the fact that the class of video making requires more operation than definition and there are no complex concepts as well. However, we do encourage them using the same software as we do, which is Edius. For easier follow up in class. Because the concepts are all the same it is just different function placements, students are free to use their familiar software, but it has to be a professional one.

Personal Learning Challenge

After mastering the names of veggies, meat and tools. It is time for me to start my plan physically now, I want to cook something.

Unsurprisingly, my roommate freaked out after I told him I was preparing a dinner for him. “I understand, but it is not like the sun is rising from the West right? I could be a good cooker why cant I?” And he did not believe me at all. Alright enough for that let us cut to the main scene.

About 6 of the 10 websites on the internet agreed with the point that noodles are friendly to beginners, which is extremely easy to make, you just buy frozen noodles and boil them in a hot pot with water. Especially Udon, which is a traditional Japanese noddle made out of wheat. Though it is my first try, I want it to be successful, but at the same time, I do not want it to be too easy and being as a learner, should never be afraid to lose. That came from my grandpa. There are so many different kinds of Udon like seafood Udon, curry Udon, fried Udon and Wasabi Udon and I think I will be making curry Udon.

I got my ingredient from the Fairway market, which is solid curry and a pack of frozen Udon.

Since it is a digital age now, I went for cooking videos online. I found out that curry can be put into the pot together with the noddle or it can be mixed with the noddle with a little bit of water after the noodle is done.

Because I was only cooking for 2, I used only like half of the solid curry.
After putting the water into the pot, I turned on my gas burner on the median fire. When the water is boiling I put Udon in and after 5 mins like it is told and shown in the video, my Udon is done. I tried tasting the noodle and it was perfect and now I just need to mix it up with the curry using chock-sticks. Easy.

However, it seemed like I was not putting enough curry into the noddle so my roommate made some chicken wings adding to it, but still, it was a very nice dinner I had and it was not a bad start.

After all, I think that video learning is really efficient for behaviourism. Since I can watch the video again and again and I am able to observe different details every time. It is better than just picture illustrations, unless it is the date with complex timelines or multiple connections, which is what I am working on my blueprint.

last but not least, after watching my roommate making chicken wings, I want to make them too but maybe I will do one of the other beginner’s easy food before that, either way, I am more confident after the tiny success on Udon!

Hi professor Madland, thank you for your time again!

After last weeks’s reading, I learnt about the learning concepts and how to get prepared before starting to learn a new stuff. I do not even know there can be a plan for learning. All I know before is every time I want to learn anything, I just read books and search on internet or just find a teacher, randomly. However, now I figure out that there are several different approaches to learning. For example, objectivism, behaviourism and connectivism. These concepts make my mind clear and I can choose my best way to learn things in a suitable and more efficient way! The describing was more seem like a preparation for cooking, I know cooking is more like behaviourism but actually, for a guy with 0 knowledge in cooking, the first step for me to learn is to learn these basic names. I tried to remember those vocabulary not through repeating memorizing but with my roommate, every time when I go to the kitchen I ask him to do a quick quiz and I can remember 80% of the tools and half of the veggie’s names now. My plan was started already and the activities in Post#2 would be a physical start.
